Frequent drop outs during web (chat room) calls

    Hi there,

I'm experiencing trouble with web calls from an office location dropping out every 15 or so minutes. From home I have no trouble and can sustain a web call for 30mins or more without dropouts, but at the office it connects, works for about 15mins then drops and I have to re-establish the call. The internet connection itself is fine at the time of the dropout, i.e. an IE download in the background continues uninterrupted, and I can re-establish the call almost immediately. Any suggestions as to what this might be? Are there settings that might need to be changed on the office firewall?

    Thanks in advance,

    Lionel

    Hi Lionel,

.....Sorry to hear about the connection problems. Please do this qualitative bandwidth test to see what is going on with your connection:

Please do a qualitative bandwidth test:

    http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/
(You may have to download java if you don’t have it)

Please click on Dulles, Virginia (Near Washington DC, USA) when the world map loads. When the new page loads please click “Click to start test” between the green bars. Then let the test run (It takes a little while), and when things stop moving, click on the “Summary” tab on the left. This tab has a traffic light on it. Once the test has run you will receive either a Green light, a Yellow light or a Red light on 5 different criteria:

    Download bandwidth,
    Upload bandwidth,
    Quality of Service,
    Jitter, and
    Packet Loss

Let me know if you get any Yellow or Red lights on the above criteria or if any values are missing. Also, please let me know what your Upload, Download and Quality of Service and Packet loss scores are. Please let me know what you find out.

    Best Regards,
    ooVoo Dave

Re: Frequent drop outs during web (chat room) calls

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply. It's a pretty basic connection here so the results aren't surprising:

    • Jitter is red at 46.1 ms
    • Packet loss is yellow at 4.1%, and
    • Upload speed is yellow at 57.0 kbps.

    Here are the results:

    • Download bandwidth: 415 kbps
    • Upload bandwidth: 57.0 kbps
    • Quality of service: 93%
    • Jitter: 46.1 ms, and
    • Packet loss: 4.1%

    Appreciate your suggestions.

    Regards,
    Lionel

Re: Frequent drop outs during web (chat room) calls

    Hi Lionel,

    ………..Thanks for testing.

    There are two problems.

1.)    Your upload bandwidth is far below the minimum required 96 kbps. At 57 kbps, I am surprised that you were able to connect at all. I am also surprised that this is a business connection since the upload is in the range of Dialup (56 kbps). ooVoo requires broadband.

2.)    Jitter – you got a “Red”  reading for Jitter. So it is understandable that your connection drops.

Jitter is a variation or dislocation in the pulses of a digital transmission; it may be thought of, in a way, as irregular pulses. Jitter can manifest through variations in amplitude, signal strength, and other elements of such waves. The usual causes include connection timeouts, connection time lags, data traffic congestion, and interference. Simply put, this jitter is an undesirable output of system flaws and interruptions. (http://www.tech-faq.com/jitter.shtml)

To fix the jitter problem, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and tell them you need this fixed.

    Best Regards,
