I don't see that as the issue at all, let's just suppose you were going to write the code for a Linus version of ooVoo, which version of Linux would it be written for? My Asus eee runs Xandros, so I vote for that version. Anyone want a different version? How many versions/ flavors would they have to write before everyone was happy? I am currently working on setting up my eee so that if I put the thumb drive in a USB port and turn it on it will be a XP PC, and if I don't put the drive in it will be a Linux PC. I am using a 8Gb drive which should contain all the windoze apps I need. I use the eee for travelling, and don't have a problem switching it to do what I need at the time, and it was never intended to do everything, or it would have come with a 250 gb hard drive.

    Quit sniveling

you are just an idiot, you could spare your stupid answer, and when you like windows then use windows and eave us linux users alone, and no it is not at all difficult to make a linux version, also skype has made and there was no problem at all with, only that skype is not good and don`t works well on windows and not on linux, so you stopt sniveling you stupid idiot and leave us alone we don`t want windows at all, we don`t want viruses. go figure with your windows and microsoft crap.

Hardly a fair response, you don't know me.

    ilanesh:
and no it is not at all difficult to make a linux version,

If you know this to be true then I suggest you offer to write the code for the program for free, If they like the product you produce they might use it, and even give you credits for writing it. I admit to not being a software developer, but having worked on mainframe telephone computers running Linux I appreciate the difficulty of writing the code for a program.

    ilanesh:

You checked with Skype to see that they had no problems?

    ilanesh:
skype is not good and don`t works well on windows and not on linux

OK now you really have me confused here, what are you really trying to say ?

    ilanesh:
so you stopt sniveling you stupid idiot

I didn't realize that I was the one sniveling, and you are redundant.

    ilanesh:
eave us alone we don`t want windows at all, we don`t want viruses

I would be happy without windows as well, and nobody wants viruses,  but since there a bunch of hackers out there who have a need to destroy someones private property, they exist. Do you realize that most of the people out there who write viruses are actually making a statement against Microsoft, as opposed to the victim of a virus. They are proving that the Microsoft product is so bad they can defeat it.

    Re: oovoo 4 linux ( ubuntu )

I don't understand where the idea that if you want to create an application for Linux you have to take in account all the distributions comes from. No developer is going to do that, and no developer in he's or her right mind is going to think that.

If you take a quick look at Skype's website (this example seems to come up the most in this thread) you will notice a statically built version of skype. I have been running that same version of skype on Ubuntu, Fedora and CentOS with absolutely no problem. All the linux distributions are basically the same. The only differences you will ever find will be vis-a-vis the package manager and some usability/security enhancements that each distro finds appropriate. The same libraries are used, the same graphical interface and most times the same desktop environment. Granted some distro's prefer installing binaries in different places, but that is a matter easely solved with a simple --prefix flag at compile time.

I have heard the same excuse from driver developers that do not wish to make the code open source. Nvidia and ATI (AMD) did a great job at writing drivers that work regardless of distro. When will this mith go away?!

There is NO need to build 300 versions of oovoo. The developers only have to build a static version. So the problem is not there! I would be inclined to accept the explanation that there are just not that many users on Linux and its a lot of work to get it done. The reason is financial and its understandable.

The open source community has always embraced a service or organization that offered source code or at least specifications for the protocol. I am sure that if oovoo would release either one of those, an open source client would emerge for the oovoo network...free of chance. I don't thik that oovoo will ever release specs (and they don't have to...it's they're right), but i grow tired of people saying that "why don't you do it if you think its easy?"...simple answer: "You CAN'T backward engineer everything!". If it were possible to write a client for a proprietary protocol, then nobody would be asking the developers for help...they would do it themselves or find someone that can do it for a fee.

The fact that people are asking for a product that the can not use because of the platform they are on can raise the awareness of the developers to a market that could potentially be profitable for them. If there is ENOUGH interest, its worth writing. If everybody would just shut up and not ask for something, where would the software world be now? If (say...) you wanted a feature in oovoo that just wasn't there...wouldn't you ask for it? is it more likely that its just going to pop up all on its own?

Oovoo for Linux general would be great.  I do see that the FAQs say it's in progress and I would love to be a alpha/beta tester.

As one of the posts suggested, I used the feedback form and stated I would like to be a tester and was promptly told that a Linux version is not forth coming at this time.

Come on Oovoo Devs, smell the roses, this could be massive for you!

I've read through the posts but still wondering.....

Will there be a Linux version or not?

    If not Why?

If yes is there a Roadmap?

    ooVoo:

We are working on ooVoo for Linux. Please send a message to support center using the feedback form if you would like to be included in the test.

I would like to be included if you can use me. ooVoo is great it beats the pants off yahoo! Yahoo messenger is too invasive and resource hungry, too bloated (could be M$) and annoying! I currently have ooVoo on my XP VM and would love to use it on my LinuxMint host instead

    Thanks,

    Bob Kerns

rkerns, from where you got this? This is very old, and it was a fals alarm, they told us that they will not make a linux version in the near future.

If this would be true, it would be really great.

Here's to renewed enthusiasm and excitement about a Linux version of oovoo. I know it's slow to come, but good things are worth watiing for!

(Of course, this is assuming that it is still coming - it is still coming, right? It would be terribly useful.)

Why you are not using Skype? This is a good software, and they don`t bash Linux, it has voice and video and it is updated and works.

I gave long ago up on oovoo, cause they won`t make any linux version, so use what is there for linux and what works in Linux. There is also Gizmoproject for Linux, it also works.

I don`t like people who only for windows and macintosh, Linux is lots more better then all this windows crap and macintosh, they are a big monopoly only, thats it, pulling out the money from the peoples pockets, horrible, opensorce and freeware is the best.Yes

Hey, I don`t no what you have with your pclinuxos, it is old, there is nothing new two years now, and the best and easiest Ubuntu are Ubuntu, gOS and some of the ubuntu based Distros. There all works out of the box.

Hey texstar and the gang takes pride in what they do. they don't rush thinks out to the public if they know it's not stable. Kde 4 is still being test and soon Pclinuxos 2009 will be release. I was only giving a suggestion that's all so keep your cool.
